Making a difference
My name is Mike Newman and I am registered blind. It seems like almost a lifetime ago since I broke the World Blind Land speed record - driving alone in a BMW M5. I hit top speeds of 178.5mph. I drove for a measured mile alone in both directions. This was on October 11th 2005 at Evington Aerodrome near York. Not bad hey?
I first thought of breaking a record to make a statement - I would be the first to admit I thrive on the adrenalin and challenge. I began pursuing my dream to make the record my own as even by everyday standards this would be something spectacular. The immediate sensation and publicity that followed on helped me to realise that my personal ambitions could and should bring benefit to others as well. I wanted to harness if I could the appeal of my challenges. So far, the fabulous Speed of Sight team and myself have, with generous support from our sponsors raised over £XXX for charity. So now I am continuing a journey to bring about the completion of ‘Project 200’. Whether you should join me on this journey as a spectator, friend, sponsor or team mate may I extend my heartfelt thanks for your continuing support - I believe every man can be great, but only with help he can achieve great things.
Best Wishes - Mike Newman
