The Story so far ...
Mike Newman is a former bank manager with a thirst for speed and a deep fascination with motorsports, who now dedicates himself to expanding the vision and scope of Speed Of Sight. Outside of his record-breaking endeavours, he is Patron of Vision Charity, Peace Parade International and heavily committed to the RAF Association Wings Appeal and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Partially blind from birth and now completely blind he has never allowed his disability to stop him achieving his ambitions.
Mike Newman has held three Land Speed Records since August 2001 when he broke the World Blind Land Speed Record driving a motorcycle at an astonishing 89 mph. However, his ambition to be the fastest blind man on the planet didn't end there and another record was set in August 2003. Driving a Jaguar XJ-R at an incredible 144.7mph, he secured his 2nd World record. His next record breaking achievement was at Elvington Aerodrome in Yorkshire. In a BMW M5, Mike reached a record breaking speed of 178.5mph.
For most of the last decade, Mike remained the fastest blind man on the planet. In April 2010 Turkish singer Metin Senturk took the record, driving a Ferrari F430 at 182mph.
In August 2010 at Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire Mike’s attempt to regain his record was thwarted by damage during the test drive to the Keating TKR supercar that was to take him to 200mph. Sadly the back up car wasn’t able to reach the required speed.
The Speed Of Sight Team are committed to Mike reclaiming his title …just one of many projects that Mike and the Speed Of Sight Team are planning for 2012.
