Speed of Sight Newman celebrates Campbell's royal anniversary
Solo Blind Land Speed Record holder Mike Newman celebrated the 40th anniversary of Donald Campbell CBE's Water Speed Record by meeting Campbell's daughter and supporting the launch of a Royal Mail stamp marking the daredevil's achievements.
Campbell – who broke the Water Speed Record in 1959, reaching 260 mph on Coniston Water in the Lake District – was commemorated by appearing on a 1st class stamp.
His daughter, Gina Campbell, was asked by Royal Mail to help launch the range of stamps featuring her dad, called “Eminent Britons”.
Gina jumped at the chance – and for Speed of Sight Newman, it was the perfect opportunity to meet his hero's daughter (pictured above with Newman), and find out more about the man behind the spectacular feats.
Mike – who is currently preparing for his latest bid to achieve over 200mph on land – said it was an honour to share in such intimate memories of a great man and that he enjoyed hearing Gina's many stories about Campbell and what motivated him.
Campbell broke eight land and water speed records and is the only individual to hold both land and water speed records simultaneously. He died on Coniston Lake in January 1967 while trying to break his own record and was awarded a posthumous CBE the same year.
